Audition Requirements

All orchestral instrument musicians, ages 22 and under, are invited to audition for one of our orchestras.  The non-refundable audition fee is $25.  If you are accepted to an orchestra, there is a season membership fee to participate.

In your audition, you will be asked to play the following requirements, plus the orchestral excerpts below (feel free to download and print them) applicable to your instrument and orchestra.  If the excerpt contains brackets, you need only play the music between the brackets; otherwise, please prepare the entire excerpt.  If you have any questions call us at (407) 257-8886 or send an email to fyao@fyao.org.  For more information on the audition process, click here.  The excerpts are available in “PDF” format and you must have Adobe Reader or equivalent software on your computer.  If you need to download Adobe Reader, click here. Special Note for Symphony/Camerata Violin Auditions: You may prepare either the “Violin” excerpt or the “Violin Alternate” excerpt below, as you choose. Picking one or the other will not affect either your acceptance or your chair placement.

Sinfonia Audition:

• Play open string major scales one octave at quarter note =72
• Play the FYAO required excerpt applicable to your instrument (see below)
• Play a short unaccompanied piece of your choice that best demonstrates your current playing ability

Philharmonic Audition:

• Play all major scales and arpeggios through four flats and four sharps, two octaves (one octave for string basses) at quarter note =92
• Play the FYAO required excerpt applicable to your instrument (see below)
• Play a 2-3 minute unaccompanied piece of your choice that best demonstrates your current playing ability

Symphony/Camerata Audition:

• Play all major scales and arpeggios, three octaves (two octaves for string basses) at quarter note =92
• Play the FYAO required excerpt applicable to your instrument (see below)
• Play a 2-3 minute unaccompanied piece of your choice that best demonstrates your current playing ability

Percussion Audition (Symphony and Philharmonic Only):

• Play all major scales and arpeggios on a mallet instrument through two flats and two sharps, one octave at quarter note =92
• Demonstrate timpani tuning to perfect fourth and perfect fifth
• Demonstrate ability to play all stick rudiments
• Play the FYAO required excerpt applicable to your instrument (see below).  Note that you must perform both the timpani AND percussion excerpts.
• Play a 2-3 minute unaccompanied piece of your choice that best demonstrates your current playing ability
